Growing Elite Marijuana – Book Review

Growing Elite Marijuana – Book Review

Growing Elite Marijuana by Ryan Riley, is best described as an amalgamation of cannabis knowledge drawn from what appears to be every known source. Riley offers incredible in-depth information into every facet of marijuana industry. Growing Elite Marijuana opens with an introduction describing it as the fruit of 18 years of “intensive research, trials and experimentation”. Riley later states that Growing Elite Marijuana can serve as an A to Z guide for the beginner, I admit I was sceptical, but after having reviewed it’s pages… I think he may be right.

Riley starts at the absolute beginning of the cannabis story, introducing use of cannabis through the ages. This sample was taken from page 18 of Growing Elite Marijuana.

“Mentioned in Chinese herbal documents dating from 2700 BC, marijuana long has been considered valuable as an analgesic, an anesthetic, an antidepressant, an antibiotic, and a sedative. Although it was usually used externally(e.g., as a balm or smoked), in the 19th century its tips where sometimes administered internally to treat gonorrhea and angina pectoris.”

The book goes on to outline marijuana basics in great detail including; tips on strain selection, cannabis variety selection, and even offers a guide to seed purchases. Later Riley offers an incredible section on marijuana sexing and stages of growth. One of the things that really has me impressed is Riley’s huge image library used throughout this book. Many authors of marijuana literature depend too heavily on illustrations to demonstrate their points but Riley uses a nice balance.

Riley clearly has done some homework, and his ability to disseminate complex technical ideas is demonstrated on page 699. This excerpt taken from a paragraph explaining photosynthesis.

“Think of stomata as microscopic pores in your plant’s skin. When a plant needs more carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, it opens its stomata. When the leaves get too hot an want to release water during transpiration, the plant once again uses its stomata, this time to let something out.”

Because of Growing Elite Marijuana’s massive size (over 700 pages), incredible detail, and thorough index of topics I must admit that Riley’s work may be referred to as the new “Growers Bible”. Riley does make several slips, whether they are simple typos or minor oversights is unclear. I have read several reviews of Growing Elite Marijuana and RIley’s critics are brutal and quick to discredit the entire work over a few errors. I must say that the good outweighs the bad, and like the Bible, Growing Elite Marijuana on occasion, contradicts itself.

There is one catch, Growing Elite Marijuana is not a printed book, it is only available as an Ebook available for download as a PDF file. Riley has reduced the price of Growing Elite Marijuana from  $219 to a mere $57 and as a bonus has packaged it with 9 additional Ebooks.  In addition to all 10 books, your purchase also entitles you to lifetime updates that are sure to come.

    Good review.
I have put off buying this book because it is an e book. I like my books in print. It would be great to see the book out in print some day soon

I would buy the book if it wasn’t ebook too

      • Rambo October 29, 2013 at 6:51 pm -

I wasn’t a huge fan of E books to start with. But they take up a lot less space and that not necessarily the kind of book you want sitting out when your mother in law is visiting so they have begun to grow on me.

Thanks for this review. I’m on their PayPal page now and was looking for opinions. Compared to equipment costs this is not a huge investment and with such a glut of information I’m bound to learn something ;).

    @the american bud

I agree, it would be good to see in in print, but you have to realize how large it is, At over 700 pages and with so many full color images it would be outrageously expensive to print.

A friend of mine has this book and let me read it on his iPad. You know, I would love to say I really like this book. It has a lot of information in it and IMO is pretty well written. He even has a fair amount of botany in it. I just cant get past all of the marketing and adverstizing. I have a really hard time paying for anything that is crammed down my throat. Personally, I am not sure there is anything particularly new in it that I can think of off the top of my head. The $57.00 price tag is a total joke. If you already have other reputable books, I say pass on this one. Nothing super exciting.

Decent book. for a 1st or 2nd read, you will learn alot. but if you’ve already read 3-4 or more growing books, you might not need to buy it (diminished returns).

Price tag is quite high for an ebook

  6. Nebula November 29, 2012 at 11:59 am -

Agreed that the price tag is pretty high, especially for an eBook, though as someone else said, I bet it would be ungodly expensive to print a 700 page book with so many huge full-color pictures. Would make a great coffee table book though. If you do get the eBook, I definitely recommend reading this on an iPad, tablet, or Kindle, as it’s just not as fun to read a book pictures on a computer or tiny smartphone screen.

Now, there is a lot of great info in this eBook. If you read it front to back, even an experienced grower will learn something, and probably a lot of things.

Marijuana plants are quite a bit more complex than a regular houseplant, but learning how to grow isn’t as crazy complicated as a lot of growers make it seem. Still, you need to learn their language if you want to grow real chronic buds and get great yields. To get consistent outstanding results, it’s important to become well-versed in a lot of info from real growers, as each one has their own biases and grow styles. You want to tune into your personal grow style.

In the growing forums, it sucks to always be second-guessing about whether this or that person in the forums actually knows what he’s talking about, and it’s a total pain to sift through so many junk posts by new growers. That’s why investing in growing books will pay off in the long run (if you read them haha).

I’ve read several marijuana books over the last decade, and learned a lot from all of them. In addition to the Ryan Riley eBook, Jorge Cervantes, Logan Edwards, J. C. Stitch, and Ed Rosenthal all have great books with great growing information. Each book I’ve read has leveled up my growing skills.

In addition to learning from online and books alone, make friends with real growers! Start making regular visits to your local hydroponics shop (for those who live near one) so you can start making friends with the people who work there. Especially in states with legal marijuana, many of the people who work at these places are actually growers themselves. Information from books is great, but there’s something really awesome about talking with real growers in person about this stuff.

All in all, I’m glad I paid for this eBook, and I definitely have gotten my money’s worth out of it via increased yields and saved time/frustration. If $57 is going to kill your growing budget, than you may have a tough time growing anyway. 😉

If you’re just looking to grow a tiny amount of buds for parties a few times a year, then maybe don’t invest in this book.

But if you’re a daily smoker like me and are dedicated to growing a constant supply of chronic buds for as cheap and easy as possible, you’ll be glad you invested in this eBook.

We do not sell Ryan Riley’s e-book. We simply provide a link to his web page for those who want to purchase it. You need to take this issue up with those who run his site. We have zero to do with any of it.

I am a little surprised to see so many positive comments about this book. I don’t like to put down anyone’s work, especially when the book is so large and clearly a lot of time has gone into its creation, but the book is horribly written and FULL of blatant errors that even nubiles can recognize.

You should always question a persons ability to write anytime you see an author using terms like “very” or “really”, but when you see “really really” in a book; that’s a STRONG indicator the author hasn’t taken so much as a basic college writting class. Despite the fact that this book is geared towards budding pot farmers, I still cringed every time Ryan said he was going to teach us how to grow “the frostiest dankest buds on the planet”. Read one Cervantes’ books on the subject, it will clearly demonstrate how one can write a book that highlights marijuana growing without sacrificing both good writing as well as professionalism.

As for the technical errors, I won’t get into them here, the book is FULL of them, some may be typos, but others are clearly inexperience/lack of knowledge on the subject (no experienced grower would ever recommend miracle grow to someone just starting to grow). The errors have been covered by myself and others in detail in certain forums around the net, Google is your friend.

The book is 700 pages worth of poorly written bad information and hijacked images (blatantly stolen from various internet sites), and I am truly sorry to the author for such a negative review, but there is no way I can in good conscience recommend this book to anyone. I mean my God, this is a reference book and he doesn’t cite a SINGLE source in the entire book let alone include bibliography (I swear to God…)!

If anyone is really interested in it, perhaps go download a pirated copy (there are tons out there), and glance through it before you throw away 70 dollars (or whatever the exorbitant price is) on your own legitimate copy.

Anybody complaining about not receiving their books haven’t realized that these are E-BOOKS…DOWNLOAD ONLY. I didn’t realize until after I purchased since there was a picture of several actual books…kinda lame, but i’ll deal with it. Hope this will throw a few tricks my way I haven’t found out myself. If i’m unpleased, I will write a fitting review.

  22. Chloroplast June 27, 2014 at 1:58 am -

Just read this book and have to leave this comment:
The author starts with a very conservative statement about internet piracy and I was about to stop reading at this very first point. He states that he invested 5 years for this book. I just can’t believe this. The book is written with language skills of a 13-year old. Poor stoner vocabulary, very repetitive and unstructured. To me it looks like the author copy-pasted a lot of half-trues from internet boards. Also the book has no references. As a scientist, this freaks me out.

But it goes on: Let’s talk about the illustration!
I have never seen a book actually published and distributed with such a poor layout! Moreover, most pictures and graphs were again copied from secondary sources without citing them correctly. Some diagrams aren’t even vector graphics and most pictures have a resolution that is to low for either print and e-publishing.

This book is not worth your money!
